Brief History AR-3 Recumbent Trike, KazeBikes.com

The concept of the AR-3 goes way back to my youth in that I had a love for bikes, go Karts, motorcycles and snowmobiles. AR-3 Recumbent Trike KazeBikes.com
It was the pre-digital age where tangible results came from mechanical innovation. Being in my mid 20’s at the time, I was enthralled by the latest bike innovations dictated by streamlining Human Powered bikes and trikes. I could not get enough of innovation thru competition and practical deviation from diamond framed bicycle development.

Being a resident of Wisconsin and far away from California where all this was taking place, but following magazine articles gave me the inspiration to come up with my own design.

I imagined a stabilizing system to make my design handle as much like a bicycle as possible. Starting with a center pivoting steering yoke at a castering angle that allowed the frame to lean aggressively into the corners and followed with a lever and linkage system forcing the front wheels to do the same.
It didn’t happen overnight. Constant perseverance and many combinations of fulcrum and pivot locations eventually yielded a stable, comfortable, natural feeling vehicle. It was highly controllable, maneuverable and most of all, exciting to ride.

All this, but now 40 years later, so with the help of modern CAD systems, superior bike components and electric motor technology, it is once again a tangible mechanical marvel with a forward looking useful purpose.

The AR-3

The Patented steering design is like no other and follows the natural feel of a bicycle because of its center axis steering system, which emulates the feeling of a bicycle while banking into turns with all three wheels.

“The Lost Recumbent” is one of my first 3 prototypes. When I relocated to Florida in 1985 I put the trike in a storage shed in central Wis. I was not able to reclaim it or bring it to Florida so we have a plan to search for it when travel is practical again.

The market for recumbents has encouraged me to revisit this innovative design. Taking old photos and flyers I was able to recalculate the dimensions and configuration.

Building and riding the AR-3 has been exciting and fulfilling for the bicyclist innovator in me. New technology and availability provides quality in all the components used. Our full service prototype and manufacturing facility provide precision manufacturing and assembly.
